The 2011 Global Education Conference is Coming.....

Steve Hargadon and I are ramping up for the second annual Global Education Conference, scheduled for November 14th through November 18th, 2011. Sessions will be held around the clock to accommodate time zones, and the best part is that the entire event is free!

In other conference news, our first set of keynote speakers has been announced. Keynotes will include Chris Dede and Howard Gardner of the Harvard Graduate School of Education, Alan November of November Learning, Ewan McIntosh of NoTosh Limited, and Ed Gragert of iEARN-USA.  We are thrilled that these distinguished speakers will share their expertise with us. More keynotes will be announced in the next week or so, so please stay tuned!

Additionally, we have a new mission statement that I think will clarify the purpose of this event. Thanks to the GEC Advisory Board Leadership Team for collaborating on this!

The Global Education Conference is a collaborative, world-wide community initiative involving students, educators, and organizations at all levels. It is designed to significantly increase opportunities for building education-related connections around the globe while supporting cultural awareness and recognition of diversity. 
The conference seeks to present ideas, examples, and projects related to connecting educators and classrooms with a strong emphasis on promoting global awareness, fostering global competency, and inspiring action towards solving real–world problems. Through this event, it is our hope that attendees will challenge themselves and others to become more active citizens of the world. Let us learn, question, create, and engage in meaningful, authentic opportunities within a global context! 

Here's what you need to know right now regarding conference housekeeping items: 

• The Call for Proposals is still open through October 31. Please follow the outlined directions.
• If you have submitted a proposal, make sure you join the presenters group in the GEC community. This is very important if you want to receive updates. 
• Session acceptances will be rolled out starting October 25. We will start chronologically with the first submissions. 
• The conference schedule will not be posted until acceptances go out. Speakers will then have the opportunity to self-schedule their presentations. 
• This is not an ICT conference nor a general education conference. Make sure your proposals are tied to our mission.
• The GEC leadership team will be going through proposals and leaving suggestions for improving your proposals. Please follow through on these comments or contact us if you have questions. 
• Volunteers are needed to moderate sessions, so please join the volunteer group if you are interested in helping. Training will be provided if you're not familiar with the Blackboard Collaborate platform.
• Our partnership list is growing. If you are a non-profit, fill out the form to partner at no cost with us. If you're a commercial entity, email hargadon@gmail.com for information about how you can be involved. 
• Badges are now available for download. Add our icon to your Twitter or Facebook profile; post a badge to your blog or web site if you are a volunteer, presenter or advisory board member. 
• We need help with outreach. Please use this press release (http://goo.gl/uIg5r) and poster (http://goo.gl/7Gf1w) to let others know about the event. 
• We particularly want to reach student groups and ministries of education. Increased student participation is sought, and we hope that ministries of education will have the capacity to inform a great number of educators about this conference opportunity.

  A new market research report notes that mobile devices now amount to almost 7 percent of all US web traffic, with Apple's iOS representing a 58.5 percent slice of all mobile traffic and the iPad now accounting for more traffic than iPhones.

  The growth of mobile devices has claimed a 6.8 percent chunk of US web traffic from conventional PCs, according to a new report by comScore.

  Of that segment, about two thirds of the traffic is from mobile phones and a remaining third is being generated by tablet users. The group notes that Apple's iPad now accounts for 97.2 percent of all tablet-originating web traffic, driving home the reality that competitors have not yet released a significant tablet competitor.

  Among iOS users, iPad now accounts for 46.8 percent of all traffic generated, making it now a more prolific tool than the iPhone for mobile web use, which represents 42.6 percent of iOS traffic.

  An increasingly important market segment

  The firm also outlined why the growth of tablet traffic is significant, noting that almost half of tablet owners have completed purchases using their tablet.

  "Tablet owners exhibited significant use of their devices throughout the entire online shopping process," comScore reported, "from doing the initial planning, conducting product and store research, making price comparisons, to finally transacting. In the past month, more than half of tablet owners looked up product or price information for a specific store (56 percent) and read customer ratings and reviews while on a tablet (54 percent)."

  The group added, "the incremental reach through mobile and connected devices should not be underestimated," pointing out that, "in August 2011, the additional mobile and connected device audience for Pandora accounted for more than half of their total cross-platform audience."

  Who rules the mobile world? Girls! No iOS

  "Although the Android platform accounts for the highest share of the smartphone market (43.7 percent in August)," comScore stated, "its total audience among mobile and connected devices in current use is eclipsed by the Apple iOS audience.

  "The iOS platform had the highest share of connected devices and smartphones in use at 43.1 percent, fueled by the iPad’s dominance in the tablet market, while Android accounted for 34.1 percent of the total mobile and connected device universe."

  While Apple has a minor lead over Android with iOS as a mobile platform in terms of its installed base (unique users), it has a major lead in the mobile traffic those users engage in.

  "When measuring market share of Internet traffic by platform," comScore explained, "iOS accounted for more than half (58.5 percent) of the share of total non-computer traffic in the U.S. Android OS ranked second, delivering 31.9 percent of overall non-computer traffic in August. With iOS having a significantly higher share of traffic (58.5 percent) compared to its share of devices (43.1 percent), it suggests that iOS users are heavier-than-average consumers of Internet content."

  It has been speculated that the huge divergence between Android's popularity (sales of Android-based phones have outnumbered iPhone sales most of this year) and its minority presence in web analytics is due to the fact that the majority of low end devices now use Android, including basic models that work like feature phones. That results in impressive sales figures for Android as a platform, but does not translate into a comparably important software platform for apps, nor an equally important market demographic.

  That reality has helps make it clear why the supposed "avalanche" of new Android tablets failed to materialize as a real challenger to the iPad over the past year, just as Steve Jobs had predicted last October.

  Unlike mobile phones, which existed as a major market long before the iPhone, tablets have never taken off prior to the release of iPad, making the new device a market unto itself much like the iPod had been. Apple's music player has not been significantly challenged in sales by any competitor over the past decade.

  If Apple can maintain a similar competitive lead with the iPad over the next decade, it will not only maintain dominance over mobile devices and the App Store software that runs on them, but also continue to eat up the market currently held by conventional computers on one end while its own conventional computers vie for market share within that market itself.

One More Thing...

Just posted this to the private Apple Distinguished Educator community site, and I thought I'd share it here as well.

While discussing an upcoming keynote today with a group, I started thinking about the phrase, "One more thing..." and realized that there are two different interpretations of these words in our world. The first comes from beleaguered educators who are faced with changing their teaching in a digital age; the other comes from Steve Jobs who always had us on the edge of our seats when he invoked that phrase. Teachers often perceive technology as one more thing added to their overburdened duties, but coming from him, you knew that something magical and transformative would follow. If only we could turn "One more thing.... " into something more positive for our colleagues who haven't yet grasped the power of technology to amplify teaching, learning and general human experiences. Let that be our mission moving forward... to continue evangelize the spirit of innovation and to never stop believing that we can collectively change the world. 

That said, I'm eternally grateful to Steve and Apple for allowing me to be a part of this community. It's been such a rich opportunity to partake in Apple culture and to learn from so many gifted and visionary people. When I first became an Apple Distinguished Educator, many people told me it would be a life changing event. I admittedly was skeptical, as how often are we given the heads up that a life change experience is imminently upon you? Time, however,  has proven this to be true, and I want to thank everyone at Apple for inspiring me to be a better educator, advocate for excellence, and active participant in this world. Let's carry on, always remembering all that Steve stood for.  We still have a lot of work to do!
